Just One Sing

Just One Sing

(this is a weekly 1-point sermon reflection by Brother York Sing)

Since May 1st 2022, I have reflected on the Sunday Service messages. How? I will pick just one part of the message that I identify with strongly and write a response to that. Of course you may say that this may not do justice to the entire message but the rationale is not to write a critical analysis of the whole message; it’s simply my personal response. It’s also not lengthy so I hope others can join me as it is not too hard to do too.

The heading which I give is ‘Just One Sing’ with the pun on ‘thing’ with ‘sing’ as, to sing is to feel good about things and it is my last name too.

Preacher: Rev Yee
Title: Walk With God

Walk With God

This morning’s biblical reference was taken from Matt 10:24-25.

When Jesus said ‘It’s finished’ at the cross, Rev Yee pointed out that was Jesus referring to His work on Earth when God gave Him up as the ultimate sacrifice. He reminded us that the Great Commission has not been completed yet which means our work is not done yet.

How do we then carry on the work of Jesus? Before he answered that question, Rev Yee pointed out that the highest realm in the religious sphere is when heaven and man are embodied as one and he pointed out that no other religions function like our belief where we can be side by side with our God in the harvest field. He also shared that we need to be like Him, both inward and outwardly. He also said that each of us might be different but we are one in the Spirit and it’s all due to the presence of the Holy Spirit that we can carry on the Great Commission.

Thus, with the Holy Spirit in us, we follow Jesus with Christ as our goal.

The first way is to be His disciple. In this Rev Yee pointed out it is a relationship with God much like that of a student and a teacher but at times that of a servant and master too. He doesn’t lead us with many rules and regulations and His requirement is not one that is beyond us. He has left His footsteps for us to follow. However, for some of us, when we find it difficult to do His work, it’s because we calculate our costs and choose to see things from our perspective. We have to note that we are dependent on a God that doesn’t change.

Next, Rev Yee pointed out that as His disciple we will have the same encounter as Christ. We will go through what He himself has gone through. The thing about us is that we often forget God and magnify our suffering which is often unavoidable to grow spiritually. He reminded the congregation that our suffering can never surpass His. He also asked the congregation to be mindful of our conduct at our workplace. If we are seen as ‘good and nice guys’, does it mean that we are more like Jesus or more like the non-believers at our workplace?

Thirdly, the goal of being a disciple is to have the full measure of Christ. (Eph 4:13) Here Rev Yee shared that if one were to accept Christ at the age of 60, that person is only an infant in Christ and it is possible that the old earthly ways would rear their ugly heads often. Hence we need to discipline ourselves as His servants, doing all for the Lord's people, not seeking our own interest, not seeking our own glory nor doing according to our own will. When faced with controversial situations, we have to ask ourselves how Jesus Himself would respond so that our responses would bear witness to Him.

Then as disciples, students and servants, we would experience steadfastly what Jesus Himself has gone through in order to continue His work.
