Preacher: Bro Johnny Chin
Title: The Mission of Jesus
The Mission of Jesus
As believers we know how important it is to be anointed to do His work and Bro Johnny demonstrated just that yet again this morning. This was his third time preaching in the church and I believe we can expect the same the next time too.
This morning’s biblical reference was taken from Luke 4:18-21 and he began by a secular reference to the mission statements of the corporate world which serve to guide businesses and to provide a context to this morning’s message.
He mentioned that Verse 18 from Luke 4 is more than a biblical verse for it articulates Jesus’s mission on earth. What then was Jesus’s mission on earth?
1. Empowered by the Spirit
Even before Jesus started His ministry, He had to acknowledge and draw strength from the Source and that was none other than the Holy Spirit. Bro Johnny quoted the examples of the various occasions Jesus had to do this: His baptism, His wilderness experience and now His ministry. If Jesus, who was and is God, had even to rely on the Holy Spirit, how much more do we as mere mortals? It is asking for anointing from God before we do His work.
2. Sent to the broken
Ps 34:18 says ‘The Lord is closed to the broken-hearted, and save those who are crushed in spirit.’ Jesus saw people others overlooked and He touched lepers, the outcast, the blind and the desperate. He also spoke to sinners, the blind and the desperate. Bro Johnny renewed my spirit when he quoted Matt 5:3. Thus He came to give the Good News in terms of grace, hope and a new beginning for all of mankind.
Bro Johnny urges the congregation to look beyond ourselves, as how we see things will guide our responses.
3. Set the oppressed free
Jesus just didn’t come to identify the broken ones but to set the oppressed free. In the widest of context, it is a freedom from which sin has no more authority. It is a freedom to follow Him and not just an absence of chain or bondage.
Before concluding, he shared his church work in Pakistan to free some of those who were enslaved in the slave factories there. It was a revealing testimony.
