Title: Disciple Training Fulfilling The Great Commission
Disciple Training Fulfilling The Great Commission
This morning’s biblical references were taken from John 14:12, John 15:15-16 and Matt 28:18-20.
Rev Yee brought into focus for the congregation that we are God’s chosen ones and not only that, Jesus had settled us on a friendship level with Him. That put us on par and established beyond a doubt why we need to carry out the Great Commission. It’s fulfilling the wishes of a friend. Rev Yee shared that apart from the work on the cross, whatever work Jesus could do, we can do too.
He then asked the congregation why the present-day church does not draw appeal as it used to. He said the reason could be the lack of discipleship training. Rev Yee differentiated the difference between being a student and being a disciple. The latter certainly entails contact between the master and disciple far beyond that of a teacher and student.
Rev Yee then spoke of a Syrian missionary who was a Muslim convert. Many felt that for him, it would be easier, after his conversion, to reach out to his fellow Muslims in carrying out the Great Commission. He acknowledged that culturally they were similar but unfortunately the Muslims in Syria had a very bad image of Christians and they would often say if they wanted to experience sin, then they just need to go to the Christian enclave. That made it hard for him, so to get around it, he had to tell them that he was a follower of Jesus. This they did not mind, for to the Muslims, Jesus was one of the prophets in their religion.
Rev Yee also set out strategies for carrying out the Great Commission and these involved specific actions and interactions between the spiritual father and son borne out of a shared responsibility.
I think his words that ‘Disciples are made, not born’ summed up the importance of disciple training in the Great Commission and with that to gain back the appeal of the church.
