Title: To Fulfill the Great Commission
To Fulfill the Great Commission
In keeping with the Church’s annual theme, Sister Joy’s message was entitled ‘To Fulfill the Great Commission’.
She highlighted three God’s provisions which believers can rely on to fulfill the Great Commission.
Indeed, the word ‘supreme’ is all-encompassing, for Jesus’ authority even covers death and demons. That, according to Sister Joy, is the basis of the Great Commission. She shared that Verse 19 of Matt 28 begins with ‘therefore’ and hence what precedes it is extremely important, which is Jesus’s authority. =
In recounting the encounter between David vs Goliath, Sister Joy pointed out that David himself acknowledged that he ‘came against Goliath in the name of the Lord Almighty’ and not by his own ability. Here, we can see that God uses ordinary people to achieve extraordinary impact. Another indication of the power in the name of Jesus is when believers are baptised, for they are baptised not in any other name but that of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Sister Joy then encouraged the members of the congregation to overcome the giants in their lives by invoking the name of Jesus.
2. Be carriers of God’s love for others. John 3:16, 1 John 4:15-16
Before she expounded on the second provision, she asked the congregation ‘If you have only one child, would you give him up to die for others?’
Sister Joy dispensed much time on this provision. He shared her personal testimony of her work in Sri Lanka where she had to minister to widows. She sensed the hopelessness and poverty among them. These sisters were hungry for the tangible expression of God’s love and despite their physical conditions which might pose the spread of infections, Sister Joy hugged 30 of them. She was a carrier of God’s love for those widows.
Then she spoke on the obedience to the cause which is borne out of love for Jesus rather than compulsion.
3. Abide in God’s everlasting presence. Matt 28:20
Sister Joy said that as believers, we are never alone in our ministry for His presence is always there for us. Matt 28:20 contains the words ‘surely’ and ‘very’ to demonstrate His very presence. These are superlative adverbs which tell us never to doubt His presence.
Sister Joy then asked the congregation what else is required for us to do. He has provided all the resources but we are often hampered by our own limitations and negative thinking. The ‘divine enableness’ is there so what we need to have are willing and obedient hearts.
