Continuing the Lord’s Work, Shepherding the Flock
The brothers from Breakthrough Mission are much loved by our God. Each time a testimony is given by one of them, you can only listen in disbelief and you will still believe because you know God is at work in their lives. They give such powerful testimonies.
This morning’s biblical reference is taken from 1 Peter 5.1-5.4. Following that reference, Ps Sing Sing shared an anecdote how he used to run relays when he was in Primary school. It was most suitable to relate to that as, much like relay runners, when we do the work of Jesus, we do not labour alone.
He then remarked that although Jesus had ascended to Heaven, His work here is not done yet and we, as His disciples, are to continue it through the Great Commission.
How then do we carry on the work of Jesus? He listed three points and the first is The Lord’s Entrusting. Ps Sing Sing then shared a current event that happened a few days ago when a pilot, despite being injured, and some crew members of flyDubai airline saved 174 passengers as they responded to subdue their colleague who wanted to crash the plane. He said as believers we have to step up to the plate entrusted to us by Jesus, like those who were saved by the actions of the injured pilot and his crew.
Then, Ps Sing Sing singled out Peter, who despite being Jesus’s impulsive disciple and even denied Him three times, did well in bringing thousands to the faith. Jesus did not cast him aside despite his human weaknesses.
The next point is being willing partners in the Great Commission. Ps Sing Sing made the point that all of us can be the shepherds that look after the human flocks. We must also remember that the flocks belong to God and we have to care for them according to God’s will.
And we have to do all this willingly, not as if we are compelled. He cited how at Breakthrough Mission, they had not just to look after the inmates’ physical needs but their spiritual ones too. Granted, there are times when the going will be tough as we meet all kinds of challenges, even from the people whom we are trying to save, but still, we have to persevere.
He also warned the congregation against temptations in the course of our duty by sharing the story of a young man who had paddled to save a rich drowning man. As the young man approached that drowning man, he was promised more and more money if he was able to save him. However, that man still drowned and the young man regretted his actions. Why? He deliberately slowed as he neared that drowning rich man as his original pure intention of saving that man had been replaced by the greed of reward.
Ps Sing also shared how he himself carried on the work of his predecessor in helping those admitted to the Mission for addiction not because he felt compelled but because he saw the need.
The third point is to be an example to your flock. Here he stressed that the Great Commission cannot be done in silo but said that teamwork is crucial. He also acknowledged the importance of constant reading of the Bible and prayers.
Ps Sing Sing shared that Peter was not only flogged and imprisoned for his belief and work but he was eventually martyred on the cross. Peter did not ask for a ‘good’ death as he felt he was not worthy enough even in death. He asked that he be crucified upside down instead.
Concluding his message this morning, Ps Sing Sing shared how a group of five young man went to bring the gospel to a particular tribe. Although they were armed they did not save their own lives when the tribal people killed them. At the point of death, the men told the tribe they were there to save and not harm, Years later, the wives of the men followed in their footsteps to carry on the work their husbands had started with the tribe. The tribal people asked why they had taken all this risk upon themselves and it was at that point that one of the women shared that she was the wife of the one of the men they had killed. The man responsible for the killing became a preacher for the tribe serving God. Needless to say, members of the tribe were saved as a result of all the work done by that group of five young men and their wives.
