Title: My Calling - Purpose in the Pit
My Calling - Purpose in the Pit
To me, Ps Rama’s message did two great things today. I think it ministered to members of the congregation who were laden with the loss of a beloved sister, Sheue Horng. The other thing was to renew in us a higher calling of God so that we avail ourselves to the Great Commission to save lives because there is no time to lose.
The biblical reference for this morning’s message was taken from Gen 50:20.
Ps Rama shared his mission work and what various other people do in carrying out the Great Commission, including how an 85 year-old pastor in Ang Mo Kio who still gives out tracts in various parts of the island. Then he mentioned that for most people who are committed to saving lives, God has to put them through a pit experience. The objective is to prepare them and not to punish them.
Using Joseph as the key example in his message, Ps Rama then shared 4 things that we could learn from Joseph’s pit experience. These are as follow.
1. The Presence of God
Ps Rama spent much time elaborating that whenever we avail ourselves to do God’s life-saving work, His presence will be with us.
2. The Pre-eminence of God
The God we serve is in total control, so even if things may appear out of sorts to our human understanding, we need to trust Him, for He knows better. He then quoted prominent believers who, despite their pit experiences, always said that God has never made a mistake in their lives.
3. The Pardon from God
God wanted Joseph to be a channel of blessing not hate. Hence, despite all that his brothers had done to him, he did not take revenge on them. He attributed all his sufferings to the higher calling of God.
4. The Perseverance for God
Ps Rama acknowledged that serving the Great Commission is no easy task but Joseph hung in there.
Ps Rama lifted my eyes and faith higher to focus on Him whenever I am in the pit, so to speak. What is crucial is we should ask ourselves why we are in the pit, if it is not for the Great Commission.
