Depending on the Holy Spirit
This morning’s biblical references were taken from Luke 4:1-2, 14, John 14:16, Acts 1:1-4, Acts 1:5-8, John 14:26, 1 John 2:27, John 16:13, Acts 2:4, Acts 2:38-41 and Revelation 12:11.
- How many among the congregation have accepted Christ?
- How many depend on the Holy Spirit on a daily basis?
There were significantly more people who raised their hands for Question 1 than 2. He reminded the congregation of the church’s theme and said that all the more we should be relying on the Holy Spirit to continue His work.
Bro Johnny gave many relevant anecdotes to illustrate the point why it is so important to rely on the Holy Spirit. One anecdote was on his wife having a driving licence but not using much of the family car. It was there for her but as she did not use it, she didn’t realise the many advantages associated with it. Her realisation came through one day when she began to use it on a more regular basis. He was driving home the spirit of depending on the Holy Spirit.
Even Jesus Himself had to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome Satan’s temptation while He spent 40 days in the wilderness after baptism.
Having established the need of the Holy Spirit in one’s life, he gave 3 points on how the Holy Spirit can help us.
The first is the Holy Spirit teaches us all things.
He shared his personal testimony of how as someone who only had a PSLE cert, he had to rely on the Holy Spirit to graduate with a Bachelor of Theology after six and a half years.
The second is The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth
For most of us, before we accepted Christ into our lives, we depended on our conscience as our moral guide. However, once we become believers, we have to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us on issues relating to God. What seems right may not be what God wants.
It is thus important for us to read His words and meditate on them.
The third is The Holy Spirit gives us power to witness
Bro Johnny shared that to taste that power we need to bear witness for Him.
In conclusion he shared Revelation 12:11 on how we can overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. We are thus to share our testimonies to continue the work of Jesus.
