Set Free To Be Sent
This morning’s message was a theological lesson that was rich in context and substance. As it ticked all the right spiritual boxes, the congregation was left in no doubt that the Great Commission is for one and all of the Christian faith.
The biblical references for the message are crucial in our understanding of the Great Commission and they are taken from Matthew 28:18-20 and Luke 4:18.
Ps Colin said that when it comes to the Great Commission, most would refer to Matt 28: 18-20 which highlight that we are ‘to go’ and ‘make disciples’ from those who are still nonbelievers. If we are only to take it at that, then it would be like clocking in for work in the secular world. Hence he said it is also crucial to be guided by Luke 4:18 too.
This is because the Great Commission also aims to see changed lives as a result of spiritual deliverance. He brought in the analogy of the car salesman in his work of selling. Let’s say the salesman were to sell a high-end car and he concentrated only on all the detailed specifications of what the car could do. However if the same salesman were to focus on the reliability, safety, the prestige of driving it while not forgetting the price tag, would you buy just listening to the detailed specifications alone or would you be more persuaded to buy based on his latter statements? This just goes to demonstrate how important it is to marry Matt 28:18-20 and Luke 4:18 in the work of the Great Commission.
To enlighten the congregation further, Ps Colin quoted the words of a local pastor who said to his congregation ‘to stop evangelising, start loving’. The command certainly carries the weight of both Matthew 28:18-20 and Luke 4:18. I believe that when we start loving people, we are marinating the ground for the Holy Spirit to do His work. It is also important to note that each and every person in this world of more than 8 billion people has a unique thumb print. This is because every one of us is a handiwork of God precious to Him, and since we are all precious, shouldn’t we help Him in this journey of salvation of precious human souls.
Jesus, in His three and a half years on earth, demonstrates to us what it means by ‘the Word became flesh’. It was Jesus in the flesh doing the work of the Great Commission and He depended on the Holy Spirit too. This was Ps Colin’s third point which covers the promise of Jesus to be with us until the end days as we do His work. In short, the power to do His work has already been given to one and all. It is therefore not a question of how qualified we are nor how perfect our plan should be but, whether we are willing.
He ended by saying that the church is not just a refuge for believers to escape to but a launching pad to serve those in need.
