Just One Sing

Just One Sing

(this is a weekly 1-point sermon reflection by Brother York Sing)

Since May 1st 2022, I have reflected on the Sunday Service messages. How? I will pick just one part of the message that I identify with strongly and write a response to that. Of course you may say that this may not do justice to the entire message but the rationale is not to write a critical analysis of the whole message; it’s simply my personal response. It’s also not lengthy so I hope others can join me as it is not too hard to do too.

The heading which I give is ‘Just One Sing’ with the pun on ‘thing’ with ‘sing’ as, to sing is to feel good about things and it is my last name too.

Title: A Dot & A Line in Life

A Dot & A Line in Life

To say that this morning’s message ticked all the right boxes is paying only a lob- sided compliment. That would merely accomplish the science part of it for the art part of it with dashes of refreshing humour was in the creative hands of the speaker, Ps Lam. Well, that is giving Ps Lam the credit but for the anointed man he is, he would deflect all to the glory of God. Not only was the title creative, the best AI in the world would be speechless too.

Ps Lam explained at the onset that a dot represents an experience and a line is a life brought about by that experience.

He used the theme of marriage as a lead-in sharing Genesis 2:22-23 and the importance of the Vow in a Christian marriage. Then he shared about the very successful HK movie director, Lo Wei, who earned a nickname as ‘millionaire director’ for he had earlier launched the careers of 2 big superstars: Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Thus when he surfaced Chenggui, everyone thought a third superstar was on his way.

Chenggui, a handsome Singaporean, courted Yuanya, a Hong Konger, and the godly couple were soon married. However Chenggui soon discovered he had nasal cancer and from a handsome man with some financial means he was reduced to one without and not only that, his treatments so distorted his face, he had turned into a man with a hideous look. Despite all that happened, his wife stood by him and did not regret one bit about marrying him in her testimony.

Chenggui himself chose to return to Singapore for this God-loving man’s mission, despite all his difficulties, was to bring his relatives and others to God. Imagine someone who described his act of swallowing was like eating glass and had difficulty speaking but having that zeal to continue his testimony for God! In fact he thanked God for his ugly look for it would make people take note of his message for God.

In this write-up it was important for me to narrate the lives of Chenggui and Yuanya in some detail because it serves as connecting this dot to the next, that is, to the next part of Ps Lam’s sermon based on Romans 12:1. This biblical reference serves to connect our dot to God and our dot begins with us offering our bodies as a living sacrifice to Him and in the process make us joint heir with Jesus in His kingdom. The Singapore couple was not a sole example, for Ps Lam met another woman who stood by her marriage vow to a man with severe health issues in Nanjing during his work in China. Both men are no longer around.

In case we are wondering how we can use our own power to do good work thus bypassing the Holy Spirit, Ps Lam had been there and done that. He shared that as a young 21-year-old, after receiving Christ, he felt that he could go on his own steam and wanted to prove this out for a week. However, he was soon tempted when he found himself alone with a beautiful woman in a lift. He soon understood the power of the Holy Spirit.

He also shared that we are not worthy but despite that, God has chosen to make us joint heir with Jesus much like the undeserving son of the old woman who inherited her house in the Thai movie ‘How to make millions before Grandma dies’.

Finally Ps Lam referred to a prayer as a dot and which the chair in her closing prayer, reminded the congregation not to stop at the dot of praying as praying consistently will extend the dot into a line - which is a life demonstrating clearly the presence of God.
