Preacher: Bro Chua
Title: Servant Leader
Servant Leader
Bro Chua is one of my favourite preachers of the Word in Chinese and this morning he reinforced that feeling.
The biblical reference for his message was taken from Matt 23:1-12.
His message on Servant Leadership started with an explanation of what the title is and following that he brought up 3 aspects of what servant leadership seemingly looked like which we are to avoid. He discussed them under the titles listed below.
Legalism
He said that the scribes and Pharisees of the past were also spiritual leaders but they were ineffective servants as they not only did not do as they preached but also practised too much legalism to the point that people felt Christianity was an impossible faith. He felt a good measure of doing what is right by God to our fellow humans is to put ourselves in the position of others and to listen often.
Show offs
Again the scribes and Pharisees of the past were quoted and this time for doing the right things but for the wrong motives. Their actions were more inclined to show off rather than to put God first. Bro Chua cautioned us to reflect on our motives often in our actions.
Frivolous Titles
Bro Chua said that none of us are above Jesus yet humans are often in pursuit of titles and he cautioned that for whatever reasons we covet titles, never use the power attached to your title to retaliate or oppress others.
Brother Chua confessed that his message was written as a self-reflection of his own service to God all these 28 years. It had taken that many years for him to realise that it was his unconscious leaning to legalism, showing off and frivolous titles that would otherwise made him a more effective servant leader of God. That was my gem too. Yes, do all to the glory of God.
