Preacher: Ps Lam
Title: In the beginning was the Word
In the beginning was the Word
The Bible says there is a time for everything and this morning’s message reminded me of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. It was a time to listen to a message that was somewhat
abstract but somehow made understandable by Ps Lam who made it look so easy to unpack what would seem abstract to most.
John 1:1-5 were the Bible verses to which Ps Lam devoted his attention. He began by unpacking Verses 1 and 2: ‘1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.’ Ps Lam equates the Word with God and they exist even before time and although I used the pronoun ‘they’, both the Word and God are one entity.
He then went on to unpack Verse 3: ‘Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.’ He said God developed the principles before the actual creation so everything has its purpose and mission.
Ps Lam also made a reference to Taoism on the limitations of words and concepts in our human understanding to fully comprehend things. The concept of God is among these so, to enable man to understand who God is, Jesus had to live among men. Ps Lam said the closest image to God among the many creations of God is man, who has several dimensions himself: his physical flesh, his cognitive ability and his moral conscience which is often represented by the human heart.
Next he unpacked Verse 4: ‘In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind’. That means the meaning of Life is in the Word and man’s ultimate role has to bring light to this dark world, a world so warped that what is considered a normal state is man’s twisted nature, and often times, in our work life, if you are not immoral, you are deemed weird.
I like the way Ps Lam ended his sermon by asking a final question whether we are willing to be the light in this darkness after unpacking Verse 5 ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’.
