Title: Behaviours that Honour God and Benefit Others
Behaviours that Honour God and Benefit Others
This morning’s sermon was based on 1 Corinthians: 10-31.
Ps Colin gave the background to Paul’s message to the Corinthians (quoted above) who were seeking an answer to whether they should consume or abstain from food that was offered to the deities.
As a relevant touch point, Ps Colin then referred to the first question in the Westminster Shorter Catechism which asks what the chief end of man is. The answer provided there is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
Following that, he listed 10 things that will glorify God:
- Worship
- Prayer
- Acts of kindness
- Living a righteous life
- Spreading love and compassion
- Following moral principles
- Serving others
- Sharing the message of faith
- Produce spiritual fruit
- Seeking spiritual growth
Then he went on to speak about 6 things that will benefit our fellow human beings:
- Avoid judgement
- Live by example
- Respect differences
- Promote unity
- Practise humility
- Educate with love
I believe the lists above are self-explanatory and Ps Colin illustrated each with relevant examples. I found my gem in one of the anecdotes. It is when we literally use our fingers to point out the mistakes of others. The make-up of our hand is such that while our first finger is directed at others, our thumb points upward and 3 other fingers are directed at ourselves. This serves as a strong reminder to me that when I point out a person’s mistake/error/wrongdoing/etc, I must not forget my own faults so I should not be so eager to be judgemental of others. And if those 3 fingers pointing at myself are not good deterrence, there is that thumb that should remind me of my accountability to God since it is pointed upwards.
