Title: A Life that glorifies God and benefits others
A Life that glorifies God and benefits others
The biblical reference for this morning’s message was taken from Matt 5:13-16.
Rev Yee made an important remark at the beginning of his message and that was ‘We are not just to glorify God through our actions but it is just as important for other people to glorify God through us. And this was followed by a most pertinent question ‘How do people recognize that we are Christians? I like his anointed answers when he said ‘it is not in what “we say” but in what people see “we are”.’ One can see the latter answer encompasses the whole being but the former merely refers to utterances. In short, it is to be the salt and light of this world. Jesus says when we become salt and light, it is also at that moment we glorify God and benefit others.
His next question is so do we glorify God? His answers to the congregation are found in Isaiah 43:7 and Romans 3:23. And to glorify God is witnessing with our life/outflowing of God’s glorious image: His Holiness, Lovingkindness and Justice.
Next, he shared what it means to be the salt of the world. It is to be helper, mediator, protector and encourager. He provided apt and ample illustrations on what it means to be each of these. To be the light, he talked about being a guide and it is through the witness of our lives that we draw people to Jesus. He also talked about the 3 Nots of the righteous found in Ps 1:1. My gem is found when he said as Christians, when we are tempted, we have many ‘brakes’ to withstand the temptations. Before concluding, he said that as Christians we cannot hide away in the comfort of our rooms just as light, to serve its purpose, cannot be hidden away. He also mentioned that an important reason why good deeds should be expressed for the glory of God is to avoid ascribing glory to man or to other gods.
In conclusion, Rev Yee said to be a witness for Christ is the Great Commission!
And to be a witness for Christ is to let others see the life/image of Jesus in us. It is only when we live a life of good conduct among people, can we be a witness for Christ and glorify God. To glorify God with our life is to bring out the characteristics of salt and light. That is, “we are”!
