Preacher: Rev Patrick Lau
Title: Do All for the Glory of God
Do All for the Glory of God
The biblical reference for this morning’s message is from 1 Cor 10:31. When you have an anointed and experienced preacher and he says there are only two points for him to cover, you know you are in for a treat because you know there will be anecdotes aplenty to illustrate those 2 points and that will certainly pass for a more interesting sermon.
I like the way Rev Patrick amplified the first word ‘So’ in the biblical reference signifying that nothing is left out of the equation. Yes, even when we eat.
Then he began with the question ‘why do you do what you do?’ It is an important question which was the prelude to the first point he was making. The answer to that question motivates us. He illustrated the point by telling the story of 3 workers who were digging and when they were asked why, the first replied that he was digging because he was told to. The second replied that he heard something would be done after all that digging, so he just dug too. The third replied that after having dug, the
place would be transformed into an orchard with plenty of fruits for all to share. I don’t have to report which of those 3 workers was more enthusiastic in his work. Rev Lau then substantiated with a relevant biblical reference from Nehemiah 4:19-23. Doing all for the glory of God would serve as the ultimate motivation.
The second point the good preacher was making in doing all for the glory of God is it unites us. He quoted Nehemiah 2:17-18. Otherwise, in his words, ‘when people do not have a common goal, they do what they want in the flesh and bring division’.
Since the beginning of the year, there were at least 4 occasions where the preacher quoted 1 Cor 10:31 as the basis of their message, Rev Lau included. However, I like it especially when Rev Lau pointed to the first word ‘So’ and amplified it. The word is only 2 letters long but so profound! And that’s my gem for the day!
