SCC’s 40th Anniversary Celebration: The Early Days

The year was 1982, but everything is still so fresh & vivid in my mind.  I was then a university student, & by His divine leading, someone brought me to the small group that Pastor had just started.  It was in a rented 4-room HDB flat at Dover Road.

For about 2 years, this group of 12 would gather together faithfully every Sunday for worship.  But because the group was new & not yet registered, we would sometimes be in fear of someone knocking on the door & reporting us to the police to arrest us. That was the political situation at that time - the government was actively cracking down on unlawful gathering of religious groups in Singapore.

Yes, to pioneer & lay the foundation for a work of God, it is inevitable to endure hardship & even pay a heavy price.  But thankfully by His divine protection, in spite of very our loud worship, the police never came, or else, SCC would never have been birthed.

And after 2 unsuccessful attempts, in March 1984, SCC was finally approved as a society by the Registry of Society. To secure that approval, Pastor told me she had to endure a long grueling interview by a ‘CID’ officer. How did she manage to get through the interrogation, to give the right answers to the officer, with her then limited English & poor grammar?  In Pastor’s own words, she said “it has to be God who did it!”

That was our Pastor’s state at that time, a young servant of God living totally by faith with no income. God called a person who had nothing - no resources & no connections & no one to depend on, except Him & Him alone, to start His church from scratch?  Why? Simply to show that with the Sovereign Lord, all things are possible, for “He alone will build His church, & the powers of hell will not overcome it (Matthew 16:18).”  So that’s a short testimony of how the SG Charismatic Church came into being.
