Title: Guard Your Heart
Guard Your Heart
I thought it was a bonus to be able to hear from Ps Lawrence again so soon.
According to him, the business of preaching is to touch both the heads and hearts of a congregation. To him it means both the Word and Spirit working hand in hand. With that anointing from God, and judging by the way the congregation responded, he had succeeded in no small measure.
Ps Lawrence then expounded 3 reasons why we should guard our hearts.
The first is because our spiritual hearts are precious so it goes without saying that we should guard whatever is precious. The way to guard our precious spiritual hearts is to pray and we need to be specific in our prayers too. Hence we need to ask God to search our hearts when we pray as only a pure, clean and strong heart is pleasing in God’s sight.
The second reason is because everything flows from the heart. It governs the way we spend our time, energies and money. It governs our desires and passions. And because our Christian life is a marathon, it is all the more important for us to have a strong heart to finish the race. We are also reminded that where our treasures are that’s where our hearts will be; so it’s important to know where our hearts lie for an impure heart is not acceptable to God.
The third reason we should guard our spiritual heart is because it is constantly under attacked. The devil knows if he can destroy our hearts, he can destroy our Christian life but if he can’t do that, he will seek to distract us. Hence, Ps Lawrence warned us not to underestimate the devil and one way is to fill our hearts with bitterness and unforgiveness. Not only that, he will fill us with greed and pride too. He shared that in his many years serving the Lord, he had seen many ministries being killed by the devil because the hearts of the spiritual leaders were afflicted.
The final point which Ps Lawrence shared that was especially pertinent was to address those among the congregation who were disillusioned in church.
He said that humans are conflicted souls for although we are born again, the old man and the new one are often in battle inside us. Hence, he said it is important to look at God and not man so that we do not miss out on God’s blessings. He quoted that the human heart is full of nooks and crannies where hypocrisy hides, where vanity lurks and falsehoods linger so much so it often deludes itself.
Ps Lawrence ended with Jeremiah 17:9 and in the process asked the congregation to search our hearts through prayers.
I thank Ps Lawrence for embalming my heart this morning.
